This talk addresses the age-old Jewish taboo on eating pig and its historical importance as a popular metaphor for Jewish/non-Jewish identity. ÌýFrom the Bible to the Talmud to modern television shows, we follow the pig's forages through Jewish history.
Speaker biography: Professor Jordan Rosenblum is the author of Rabbinic Drinking: What Beverages Teach Us ÄÛÌïÑо¿Ôº¹ÙÍø Rabbinic Literature (2020); The Jewish Dietary Laws in the Ancient World (2016); and Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism (2010). His most recent book Forbidden: A 3,000-Year History of Jews and the Pig won the 2024 National Jewish Book Award.
